 De Cotta Law & De Cotta Property, dedicated to the international ‘Inland Costa del Sol’ foreign residet and ex pat community is proud to have sponsored of the Lawn Bowls Winter Championships at the prestigious Lauro Golf Resort this month.

Jon Sutton, Partner and head of the local Coin office was proud to present the winning trophies, together with co-sponsors Lloyds Bank International.

In all there were seven disciplines of bowls played, Ladies Singles, Pairs and Triples. Men's Singles, pairs and Triples and Mixed fours.

In very windy, but fortunately dry conditions all through, Kate Morris, (Benalmadena BC), skipped the winning teams in both the Ladies Pairs, with Amber Dineen, against Linda Hall & Pam Cole, (Mijas BC) and Triples, with Amber Dineen & Marion Allen, against Linda Hall, Geraldine Robinson & Pauline Ball, (Mijas BC). And to crown it all, Kate, a very close game in the semi-final against Geraldine Robinson (Mijas B.C) 21-20, beat Linda Hall also of Mijas B.C. 21-13 in the final.

The Mixed Fours competition was very closely fought out at every stage with Gordon and Margaret Kain and Murray and Marjorie Johns (Santa Maria B.C.) beating Don Smith, Michael Glithero and Frank and Pauline Ball (Mijas B.C) in a very good final. The Men’s Triples team, Don Smith, Frank Ball and Michael Glithero (Mijas B.C) had a comfortable win in the final, 24-8 over Tony Frostick, Julian Thomas and David Christensen (Lauro B.C.), who had bowled outstandingly well to reach the final. Michael Detheridge and Alan Plummer (Benalmadena B.C.) won the Mens Pairs title by narrowly beating Don Smith and Frank Ball (Mijas B.C.) The Mens Singles title was won by John Sullivan (Benalmadena B.C.) after just winning against Michael Detheridge also (Benalmadena B.C.) in the semi-final  21-20, he went on to have a comfortable victory in the final over Terry Morgan (Lauro B.C.) 21-10.

Exhibition of Nerja-based artist, David Kenning's work at offices of De Cotta Law - article by Naomi Diestro

Naomi Diestro, legal secretary with De Cotta Law in Nerja is also a writer and recently wrote an article about local artist, David Kenning for Insight Magazine.

I was fortunate to meet local artist David Kenning and his wife Anna at a barbecue recently, and they kindly invited me to their quaint village town house to have a look at David’s artwork. 

As I glance around at the dainty curtains, pretty decorations and heavenly balcony view, it is quickly apparent that they are lovers of beautiful things … and no television in sight! It seems that being creative, and enjoying the creative work of others, is how this Frigiliana couple best like to spend their time. And from the amount of paintings they have in their home, it is clear that both David and Anna live and breathe art. As Anna shows me around, she tells me that art is something her husband has always been good at: “Even as a child, he won all the art prizes at school”.  I am taken upstairs to see a room filled with David’s charming prints (many of which have been translated into screenprints), and as I admire them all it occurs to me that, like me, there must be people who would love to see one of these paintings hanging on their wall, if only they knew about them!  So here we are mentioning them, and David Kenning’s paintings are also being displayed in Nerja this month.  

David Kenning has always expressed himself through art, with the exception of one brief period following a heart operation, when the yearning to paint had deserted him. But the intricate patterns on the rug next to his sick bed were intriguing him, and he reignited his passion when he finally picked up a paintbrush and took pleasure from the precision in painting it. His chosen career was working as a Graphic Designer and Art Director for several editorials, including Readers Digest and The Times newspaper, and then he went on to be a teacher of Graphic Design at Southend College of Art and Technology before taking early retirement and moving to Spain back in the 1980s.

Anna and David once completed a three month journey from Gloucester to Almuñécar, painting watercolours as they went. They were inspired by Laurie Lee’s classic book “As I walked out one summer morning”, which is a memoir of his epic journey on foot at the tender age of 19. They retraced and captured on canvas the places and sights Laurie Lee would have seen, and all these works were displayed at exhibitions in Madrid and London, with a selection being reproduced in calendar form. Laurie Lee is featured in David’s painting entitled “Descansando” (65 € for the screenprint).

David Kenning’s paintings are mostly watercolour landscapes of Spain, a country he loves and never wants to leave. His most widely recognised work is his striking posters of Frigiliana (Ingenio) and the Nerja church (Iglesia del Salvador), which are popular with both tourists and locals.

De Cotta Law’s St. Patrick’s Day sponsored Charity Walk raises 1.537,15€ - it was held on Saturday 17th March from Frigliana to Nerja, with everyone later enjoying a paella lunch and glass of Guinness on the beach

De Cotta Law, the firm of Spanish Abogados and English Solicitors dedicated to the international community in Nerja, sponsored a St Patrick’s Day Charity Sponsored Walk. Funds raised were distributed between:

• Cudeca Foundation, the Cancer Hospice on the Costa del Sol
• St Michael’s Anglican Church Roof Fund (Iglesia de San Miguel) in Plaza Andalucía
• The Nerja Donkey Sanctuary

The walk raised 1.537,15€ !

The 3 hour walk was downhill and ended with a paella lunch and glass of Guinness at Merendero Pepe Mesa on Playa Playazo , together with charity raffle.

De Cotta Law Supports Helping Hands in Tenerife Charity Event

De Cotta Law’s Canary Islands’ head office, headed by Vera Liprandi, is a proud supporter of the charity Helping Hands in Tenerife. In December, 2011, Vera Liprandi attended the charity event in aid of Martha Dos Centre in North Tenerife, supporting children with Cerebral Palsy, ad the Guardyl Children's Home in Granadilla supporting the orphaned children. The law firm donated a raffle prize and helped to raise the amount of 2330 Euros that were used to buy Christmas presents for the children of both the charities supported; further accepted donations will go towards school books and materials.

Sponsored Charity Walk – 11.30am, Saturday 17^th March Frigliana to Nerja including paella lunch

De Cotta Law, the firm of Spanish Abogados and English Solicitors dedicated to the international community in Nerja, is sponsoring a Charity Sponsored Walk this month.

• The Walk will be on Saturday 17^th March, and will be in aid of:
• Cudeca Foundation, the Cancer Hospice on the Costa del Sol
• St Michael’s Anglican Church Roof Fund (Iglesia de San Miguel) in Plaza Andalucía
• The Nerja Donkey Sanctuary

The walk will start at 11.30am at Virtudes Bar Café at the entrance to Frigliana’s Old Town.

 The 2 ½ to 3 hour walk is downhill and will end at the cobbled bridge at the entrance to Rio Chillar (near the Supersol Supermarket), followed by a Paella lunch at Merendero Pepe Mesa on Playa Playazo complete with charity raffle.

(For those not wishing to complete the walk may join the group for the final stroll to the restaurant.)

To take part, and receive a sponsorship form, please contact Naomi or Helene at De Cotta Law’s new offices at number 11, Calle Diputación, a few minutes from the Balcon.

Each entrant makes a 10 euro charity donation that includes lunch. Walkers that get more than 50 euro in sponsorship will not need to make the donation.

The British & Foreign Resident Community enjoyed yesterday’s Anglican Church Christmas Carol Service in Nerja – sponsored by De Cotta Law

Yesterday’s Carol Service was enjoyed by some 250 people.

After the Festive Service, the congregation had Christmas Refreshments, including cakes, cookies, minced pies and mulled wine, provided by local law firm, De Cotta Law.

The collection raised 515 euros for De Cotta Law’s chosen charity, for Nerja’s ‘The Sisters of the Good Samaritan’.

The annual carol service was hosted by the Reverend Geoff Johnston and also featured performances by The CoraXalia International Choir; The Cámara Cantilena Music Group; and Joe Boyle.

A big thank you to Naomi Diestro of De Cotta Law for all her hard work in making this event possible.4

A recent probate case handled by De Cotta Law Partner, Jon Sutton has been recognised with thanks by both the family of the deceased and CUDECA Foundation, the Costa del Sol Cancer Care Hospice.

Jon Sutton successfully administered the estate of the deceased here in Spain on behalf of the family living in the United States, and Jon was also able to facilitate a generous donation of over 30,000 euro from the estate to CUDECA.

In the words of the family, “Jon Sutton worked out a complicated situation over the past year. For this reason, part of what CUDECA Foundation is receiving is also due to his generosity.... Nerja Decorative and Fine Arts Society (Nerja DFAS) was established in October 2002 as an independent member society of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) in the UK

Nerja DFAS is a thriving society of over 160 members and its primary aim is to further the enjoyment, knowledge and awareness of the Arts internationally, and to stimulate interest in the artistic heritage of Spain.
The season of activities runs from October to May. The principal content is a programme of 8 illustrated monthly lectures held at the Centro Cultural, Calle Granada, Nerja. These cover a wide range of artistic, historical and cultural topics given in English by lecturers from the UK.
